Title: Phases of Matter
Year: 2016
Material: Polyester Yarn, Monofilament Nylon Yarn, Spandex
Phases of Matter explores a modular approach to footwear, reducing components, processes, and material waste. The midsole is a three-dimensional woven honeycomb, shaped on a handloom for flexibility, lightness, and energy absorption. Its auxetic structure expands and contracts with natural foot movement, while interlocking components allow assembly, repair, and customisation without adhesives or sewing.
The upper is woven seamlessly as a single piece, with shape and support defined through variations in weave density. The project demonstrates how sustainable innovation can emerge from rethinking existing equipment, uniting performance, aesthetics, and a no-waste process.
