Title: Please Be Seated
Year: 2015
Material: Polyester and spandex yarn, metal tubing
Created in collaboration with Parsha Gerayesh, this work explores the intersection of textile engineering, furniture, and sculptural form. The piece exists as a woven artwork suspended on the wall, its structure activated only through interaction. When pulled forward, the textile transforms into a functional chair, shifting from flat surface to volumetric support.
Zones of elasticity and restraint are engineered directly into the weave through the combination of polyester and spandex yarns. Areas of stretch allow the material to conform to the body, while stabilised regions provide structural lock and support. This interplay between flexibility and tension enables the transformation from object to furniture without additional mechanisms.
The work investigates how woven structures can hold latent function, a form that changes state through use, inviting a reconsideration of the boundaries between art, design, and the body.
