Title: Aperture Studies
Year: 2025
Material: Nylon monofilament warp, TPE weft; cotton/linen tapestry weft (select works)
Aperture Studies is a series of handwoven prototypes exploring the structural and perceptual language of the Woven Apertures series. Each piece begins as a flat cloth on the loom, then is cut from the warp and rotated ninety degrees to reveal a three-dimensional internal structure. The selvedges become both edge and geometry, transforming the boundaries of the cloth into sculptural form.
The studies investigate floating colour and layered volume. Tapestry techniques are used to create diamond shapes within the weave, while shifts in layered cloth, from single to multiple layers and back, generate triangular and circular forms. Constructed from translucent nylon monofilament and flexible TPE, with some pieces incorporating cotton/linen tapestry weft, the works explore expansion, contraction, and the emergence of space through material-led construction.
